who we are

Niko Group is a family owned company, renowned throughout Europe for its simple, innovative, stylish, life-course durable and scalable solutions and services for the majority of people in their living and working environment.

The company was founded in 1919 by the brothers Alphonse and Werner De Backer. After starting out producing bicycle chains, the pair later began manufacturing electrical switches. First in porcelain, later in the first form of plastic, Bakelite. The company has since grown at rapid pace to become a market leader in several markets throughout Europe.


Niko Group at a glance:

  • 1972: the company moves from the centre of Sint-Niklaas to Industrial Park West.
  • 1992: Niko acquires the transformer factory EREA in Wijnegem.
  • 2004: Niko takes over Intensia, a company specialised in care registration systems.
  • 2007: fifthplay is founded, with the aim of developing an innovative software platform.
  • 2007: Niko takes over IRS, a specialist in high-end automation projects for apartments.
  • 2008: Niko Group acquires the Danish firm Servodan, a specialist in sensors and light control.
  • 2009: Niko Group is structured into to 3 separate business lines.
Today, Niko Group employs over 700 people and has a turnover of around € 120.000.000
The Niko Group consists of three business lines (Niko, Niko Projects, fifthplay), EREA industrie (industrial transformers) and Servodan (intelligent lighting control solutions).
